| As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have been practicing Jhana meditation for some time. In the 1st Jhana, I have been in the third factor, Piti, which can be translated as euphoria or pleasure. The focus of the sitting has been on physical pleasure, I chose smiling. I have now entered into the 2nd Jhana, which takes the meditator from physical pleasure and creates a shift to emotional pleasure, or from Piti to Sukha - translated as joy. I have done several sits with the 2nd Jhana and there is a subtle difference between the two (other than the obvious). In my (so far short lived) experience, Sukha is very calming to the mind. Piti was very challenging as the meditator can do nothing but observe the physical pleasure. No interuptions or else the state of mind shifts back to a less quiet state of mind. Incredible session with Yana this evening. We have been engaging in conscious connected breathe therapy and the previous few weeks have been spent on deep healing. Through conscious connected breathing one accumulates life force (prana, chi, ki) which starts to move freely through your body (experienced as tingling, energy rushes or waves). This loosens up stored blockages held in your four-body energy system (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual), thus working on all four levels at the same time. Therefore possible experiences can be manifold and may vary every time. The spectrum ranges from physical sensations of heat, cold, pain or pleasure, waves or bursts of energy, to release of emotions (sadness, anger etc.), realisations of dysfunctional thought patterns or new thought connections and insights, and deeply spiritual or energetical experiences or any combination thereof. This evenings session was a little different. We presumed our usual position (me laying down on the floor with cushions and head between Yana's legs) but instead we did a guided loving-kindness meditation. The subject (observer and observed) .. myself. Yana says, I cannot receive that which I cannot give myself. It was an unbelievable session. I am thankful to have had a good listener & a kind heart to share the experience with after the session was over. We went for a drink (first one in 4 1/2 months! ooh how tasty a brown cow can be) and I headed home. Now I get to look forward to a weekend of packing :| |
An online marketplace for selling and buying all things handmade!
It's like shopping at the artists market, but from your own home.
I discovered the website just in time for Christmas and along with my
trip to Blue Banana Market in Toronto, have managed to get almost everyone on
my list home made gifts.
Every morning, when we wake up, we have twenty-four brand-new hours to live. What a precious gift!
We have the capacity to live in a way that these twenty-four hours will bring peace, joy, and happiness
to ourselves and others.
Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see.
The Question is whether or not we are in touch with it. We don't have to travel far away to enjoy the blue sky.
We don't have to leave our city or even our neighborhood to enjoy the eyes of a beautiful child. Even the air we
breathe can be a source of joy.
We can smile, breathe, walk, and eat our meals in a way that allows us to be in touch with the abundance of happiness
that is available. We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years
for a diploma, and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive at the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive.
Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. We need only to be awake, alive in
the present moment. ... Thich Nhat Hanh

post a commentHello Kelly
I'm really enjoying reading your blog and have found many of your posts both moving and informative. I've only recently started meditating with any serious intent and my aim is to reach 'access concentration'. Do you mind if I ask how long one should meditate each day in order to get to this stage?
Regards and best wishes
Martin
Hi Martin,
I see you are going on a retreat soon! How exciting for you :)
There are no 'rules' in meditation, Martin. Do what you feel comfortable with :-) Be consistant and diligent in your practice.
When we put meditation first, we put ourselves first. Experiencing this truth, incentive is found within oneself. And eventually we are able to extend that state of mind found in meditation into our daily lives. Then there is never a time where we are not meditating.
